Hi Jocelyn,
realraum is a both a non-profit association, a hackerspace composed of students and people interessted in internet technology as well as developing and testing new protocols (anytun, DN42, etc) or VPN technology as well as testing and deploying various physical link technologies in a community context. E.g. we built our own subterran fiber links, are vpn-tunneling with help of the local universities and other local associations and are operating some IR-laser- and 60Ghz-links.
Beyond that, we are planning on providing other community focused non-profits as well as network-technology-developers with hosting opportunity and networking help. However, the later is not feasable without at least some uplink connection that does not depend on commercial providers that have so far proven to be rather unsupportive.

we are non-profit
difficult to act and learn with these technologies as getting access is very prohibitive
